Overview

The Arkansas Fly Fishers, "Central Arkansas' Fly Fishing Club", celebrates over thirty years as an organization and as an affiliate chapter of the Federation of Fly Fishers. Founded by three long-time FFF members (Frank Brown, Jim Wingfield, and Dave Whitlock) back in 1973, it was only natural that the AFF would adopt the FFF's motto as their own, "To Conserve, Restore, and Educate through fly-fishing".

AFF meets at Whole Hog Cafe (2516 Cantrell Rd, Little Rock, Ar 72202) the 3rd Monday of every month from 6pm to 8pm, GUESTS WELCOME!; AFF Board Meetings are held the 4th Monday of every month from 6pm to 8pm; all members are welcome to attend. For more information; contact the President or any of our Board Members!

History

THE ORIGINS OF THE AFF: Back in the mid to late 1960s, a fly fisherman casting his line on an Arkansas tailwater would be an odd sight to the bait and lure anglers drifting by in their johnboats. There just weren't that many fly fishers around in those days. So when one fly fisherman came upon another of his kind on the banks of the White, Norfork, or Little Red rivers it was not unusual for them to strike up a conversation and make an effort to get to know one another. These serendipitous encounters would establish a common ground for the future formation of fly fishing clubs in Arkansas, including the first Federation of Fly Fishers-affiliated club formed in the state--the AFF.

Conservation

Whether it's assisting Arkansas Game & Fish Commission employees with fin clippings and electro-shocking or improving the habitat on a particular section of river; helping to stabilize and restore a river bank as an AG&FC "Stream Team" member or supporting the Nature Conservancy's Strawberry River Preserve and the AG&FC's Collins Creek Project; fighting to halt gravel mining on Crooked Creek and teaming with other conservation groups to stop the proposed damming of Bear Creek or planting brown trout eggs at Cow Shoals on the Little Red River; for over three decades Arkansas Fly Fishers has been committed to living up to its motto of "Conserving and Restoring" the fisheries of Arkansas.

Education

"Educating through fly-fishing" is one part of the motto of the Federation of Fly Fishers, and of its affiliated chapter, the Arkansas Fly Fishers. Since its founding, AFF members have strived to share their knowledge of fly-fishing with both their fellow members and the general public. Today, the AFF offers numerous fly-tying venues, fly casting instruction by FFF Certified Instructors, periodic classes in rod building, and sponsors classes for the Boy Scouts of America's Fly Fishing merit badge.
